Adam woke up cold. Cold and late. According to the clock on his phone, it was nearly six in the morning.

Fuck.

But his initial rush of panic over not getting up an hour earlier was immediately replaced with a stronger anxiety over where Cole was.

He sat up quickly and looked around. Adam’s clothes were piled up neatly on the coffee table, which was not how they’d been left, and Cole’s clothes were nowhere to be found. The knit throw his mother had made, which usually hung on the back of the corner chair, had been draped over Adam’s body.

He heard the faint noise of voices coming from down the hall. Not Cole’s voice either.

What the fuck? Who was that?

Adam grabbed his jeans from the night before and yanked them on, moving quickly but silently. When he was halfway down the hall, he relaxed when he recognized the voice as coming from the static of a tiny speaker in a phone.

He tensed up again when he realized who that voice belonged to. Someone Adam hadn’t heard from in so long, someone whom he’d only heard speaking once before, that he didn’t recognize the sound right away.

Marco. Cole was listening to his messages.

He found Cole sitting at the small kitchen table by the window, holding his phone in one hand and biting his thumbnail in the other as he listened.

Adam knew it was wrong, but he couldn’t help but listen as well as Cole swiftly moved through his messages.

“Baby, I know you’re pissed, but running away isn’t the answer—”

“Next message,” said the electronic female voice when Cole moved on.

“Okay, seriously, where are you? I’ve checked in with our friends, and they haven’t seen you either. I’m sorry, all right? Is that what you want? Just please—”

“Next message.”

“What the fuck? I found your suitcase and computer gone. If you’re going to leave, then at least have the balls to tell me to my face. Call me back already. I just want to make sure—”

“Next message.”

“You can’t treat people like this! Making them worry and vanishing without a word. Where the fuck are you? This is bullshit. I’m seriously getting pissed off. You think you can just take off like that and I’ll be okay with it? Get your ass back here now.”

Adam couldn’t stand there listening to anymore. He had to make himself known. “How many more messages are there?”

Eyes wide, Cole jumped when Adam spoke, like a frightened rabbit. He certainly looked as scared as one with that black eye. Last night, Adam had almost been able to forget all about it.

Cole relaxed quickly, however, looking back down at his phone. “There’s about forty messages like this. They all get steadily angrier.”

“How many more are there to listen to?”

“Fifteen. Don’t think I want to hear what he has to say in the rest of them.”

Adam waited, watched. Cole sighed and started tapping on the screen of his phone. The same female robot voice from before eventually responded to him.

“Messages deleted.”

It was troublesome when Cole didn’t turn to look at him.
